What is Tooth Extraction?
A dental extraction is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus in the alveolar bone. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but most commonly to remove teeth which have become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease, or dental trauma, especially when they are associated with toothache.
Our dentist will numb the tooth, jaw bone, and the gums around the area with local anesthesia.
During the procedure, you may feel pressure, but without pain. This pressure is simply part of the process of removing your tooth. Your dentist may choose to section your tooth, meaning your tooth will be cut into sections and removed piece by piece. This is a relatively common procedure. Throughout the process, we will make every reasonable effort to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Reasons You Might Need a Tooth Extraction
In situations where there is extensive tooth decay or damage and saving the tooth is not possible, tooth extraction is the best way to prevent further oral health problems. Some of the cases that may require tooth removal include:
- An impacted wisdom tooth
- A severely infected tooth that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
- A tooth severely damaged by injury or decay
- A baby tooth that has not come out before the permanent tooth grows
- Teeth extraction can also be done before orthodontic treatment if the jaw is too small or the teeth are crowded.
Types of Tooth Extraction
There are two types of dental extraction, simple extraction, and surgical extraction. A simple dental extraction is suitable in cases where the teeth to be removed can be seen and are feasible and accessible. In this procedure, the tooth can be extracted without the need to file or remove the bone.
In a surgical tooth extraction, some parts of the bone have to be removed to get to the tooth. Typically, an incision is made into the connective tissue to access the affected tooth. A situation where the bone to be removed has not erupted out of the bone requires a surgical procedure. Given the complexity of surgical extractions and the pain associated with the procedure, general anaesthesia is needed.
